ELDER CARE DECISIONS

As our parents grow older we are often placed in a position to become their caretaker and to be involved in a plan that will address their changing needs.

This situation can become very difficult and extremely stressful especially when one or a combination of the following events occurs:

1-     Parent is disabled or has become ill and spouse is unable to care for them or make appropriate decisions.

2-     Parent is resistant to help

3-     Parent is living alone.

4-     Parent is living out of town.

5-     Parent is unable to understand medical facts clearly.

6-     Parent disagrees with your recommendations.

7-     Siblings view the situation differently.

8-     Siblings disagree as to the handling of funds

9-     Financial limitations exist.

10- Frustrations with the health care system and programs and resources for the aging.

As a result you may find:

a – family members confused as to how to proceed

b – conflicts among your family members preventing them from providing

the best possible solution for your parent

Mediation can bring the involved parties together to assess and discuss the situation in a calm, private, neutral environment. All possible options will be discussed and considered and pertinent information will be provided by the mediators in an effort to reach a realistic and appropriate solution.

The focus will be to identify any misunderstandings, misinformation, misperceptions or confusion in communication that might be preventing family members reaching an effective and concrete health plan for your parents present and future physical and mental health needs.

Our experience has been positive when a neutral third party is involved. We realize this is an emotional time for everyone and often decision making, listening skills and the ability to tap into resources are affected.

The Mediation Group is the neutral third party that has access to these resources and can guide you through this difficult process.
